Are You Feeling Flexible?

Try something right now.

Stand up and walk a few steps with your knees completely locked, stiff, rigid, unbending. Feel what that does to your whole body. Feel how it travels upward. How it changes the way you carry yourself, the way you land, the way you move through space.

Now soften them. Just slightly. Feel the difference.

That small shift in willingness to bend is not just physical. It is a conversation your body is having with your mind.

The joints of the body are the language of movement. They are where your thoughts and feelings meet action. Every joint is a place where the body must decide: do I stay rigid, or do I yield? Do I hold my position, or do I find a way through? The knees, in particular, carry this conversation with more weight than almost any other place in the body.

In emotional anatomy, the knees are your shock absorbers. They allow you to bend, run, dance, stand, and navigate the uneven ground beneath you. They take the impact of life so the rest of you don’t have to. When they are healthy and flexible, energy moves through you freely. When they are locked, stiff, or painful, the body is telling you something worth listening to.

Do you experience knee pain?

Inflammation in the knees can reflect irritation or anger, something in your life that has been aggravating you, or someone you have been quietly seething about. Stiffness in the knees often shows up when there is inner resistance to flexibility, a rigidity in how you think about yourself, others, or a situation you don’t want to bend toward.

If you are feeling frustrated about a change being asked of you, or resistant to a movement your life wants to make, you may find it showing up right here. In the joints. In the place where the body is designated for bending.

Stand still for a moment and notice. Are your knees locked? Many of us lock them without realizing it, standing in line, waiting, holding ourselves upright through sheer force of will. Locked knees are a holding pattern. They say, “I am not moving.“ I am not yielding. I will manage this on my own terms.

Practice softening them. One at a time. Let the slight bend come back in. And as you do, say something to yourself quietly, genuinely: I am willing to be flexible. With myself. With others. With what is being asked of me right now.

This is BodyMind Integration. Not a concept. A practice you can do standing in your kitchen.

And as always, notice which knee is speaking loudest. The right knee carries your masculine energy, your outer world, your action, your doing. Pain or stiffness on the right may be asking: where are you being too rigid in what you demand of yourself, or in how you show up for others? The left knee carries your feminine energy, your inner world, your feeling life, your self-relationship. Pain or stiffness on the left may be asking: where are you refusing to be gentle with yourself, or flexible in how you see who you are?

The body does not ask complicated questions. It asks simple ones, over and over, until we are willing to hear them.

Are you willing to bend?

Are you willing to find your balance?

Because flexibility is not weakness. It is what keeps you from breaking.
